Summer in Venice: the must-see exhibitions of 2025

Summer in Venice is not just the Biennale. Alongside the International Exhibition of Architecture curated by Carlo Ratti, the lagoon city offers a packed calendar of exhibitions, ranging from ancient to contemporary art, from photography to design. Just pack your suitcase and be inspired.

New eyes on the classics

The exhibition "Corpi moderni" [Modern bodies] at the Gallerie dell’Accademia proposes a fascinating investigation into the image of the human body between the late fifteenth and the early sixteenth century, with masterpieces by Leonardo, Dürer, Michelangelo, Tiziano and Giorgione. At Palazzo Ducale, "L'oro dipinto" [Painted Gold] tells the story of the bond between Venice and Crete using Byzantine icons and the work of El Greco, who embarked on his career in the lagoon city before moving on to Spain.

Modern and contemporary perspectives

The exhibition "Anatomy of a space" at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection explores the pictorial universe of Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, a Portuguese artist, who is well-known for her blend of the abstract and the figurative. Ca' Pesaro, on the other hand, is hosting three complementary projects: Eleonora Rinaldi's "Órama", which plays with the ambiguities perceived between dream and reality; Antonello Viola's "L’oro della laguna", in which glass and painting blend to reflect the Venetian light; "Il poema della vita umana" [The Poem of Human Life] by Giulio Aristide Sartorio, an imposing symbolist cycle visible once again more than a century later.

Sculptures and video narrations

The Venetian venues of the Pinault Collection are focusing on sculpture with Thomas Schütte's "Genealogies” at Punta della Dogana and Tatiana Trouvé's “La strana vita delle cose” at Palazzo Grassi. Both artists use bronze to explore complex topics, such as power, memory and identity.

The power of the sign

At the Prada Foundation, the exhibition “Diagrams”, curated by the AMO/OMA studio, investigates visual communication and its ability to reflect contemporary urgencies in data, maps and diagrams.

Photography amidst portraits and Polaroid

The Stanze della Fotografia on the island of San Giorgio are celebrating two maestri of the lens. Robert Mapplethorpe, with his “Classical forms”, offers a selection of over 200 works ranging from nudes and portraits to still life. By contrast, Maurizio Galimberti uses Polaroid to deconstruct the images into mosaics to restore shattered, poetic visions of famous faces and iconic landscapes.

Stories of the Glass Rooms

Another must-see event is “1932-1942. Murano Glass and the Venice Biennale” in the Stanze del Vetro, Island of San Giorgio Maggiore. Curated by Marino Barouvier, the exhibition reveals a decade of great creative ferment, during which Murano was given a permanent space at the Biennale in appreciation of the excellent quality of its decorative art.

Ca’ Lucrezia looks forward to welcoming you to Venice

A visit to these exhibitions is also a way of experiencing an authentic Venice, far from the streams of tourists you would expect. Locanda Ca’ Lucrezia is the ideal starting point for a summer of art.
